Short films are an essential foundations of the film industry, inspiring creativity and shaping the cinematic landscape. For many years I have worked with emerging talent to cultivate new storytelling ideas and showcase cultural diversity within the global film community. I started my journey more than 20 years ago at the NFTS (National Film & Television School) where I was instrumental in bringing a number of student projects to fruition.
Since then, many of the short films I have produced or directed have appeared at leading festivals across the world, attracting prizes and critical attention alike. This has enabled me to hone my craft and create the fantastic network of talented partners that I work with today. Indeed, I am proud to include some very successful and well-known artists in that group!
The main reason I still choose to create short films is to experiment without commercial pressure. Ideas don’t appear in a ready packaged and orderly way. They need to be developed. I am a firm believer in ‘ideas beget ideas’, so the art of short filmmaking should always remain in the repertoire of a dedicated creative.
So, whether experimenting with new technologies, visual styles or storytelling approaches, I am always keen to collaborate with talented filmmakers and shape our film industry. My team and I will consider scripts from established writers and their agents. If we think there is potential, we will seek funding and distribution opportunities as appropriate. After more than two decases I believe short films will continue to provide the stepping stones for our future.
